Cinematography

 Cinematography

In class we learned about cinematography. From just looking at the word I thought it was going to be hard. It wasn't that hard to understand but it was kind of easy to understand. Cinematography is the art and technology of motion picture photography. So its mostly about the cameras movement, angles, and shots and what they are used for in general .

Shots

There are many type of camera shots but I won't talk about all I will just give a couple basic ones. First we got a Close up shot which is where the frame has just the head or face of the character in the screen. Its mostly used to show the emotion of the characters. Next we have a Long Shot which's shows the character form top to bottom without filling the screen. This shot is used to set the scene and the characters place in that scene. The last one I will give is Full Shot which is where the camera shows the character from top to bottom filling the frame. Its used to show more action rather than showing more emotion. I picked these to tell you about because these are one that you would basically see in most films.

Movements

There also many camera movements but ill give the ones that are basically used in most films. First we have tracking where the camera follows the character. Its commonly used so the audience can experience what the character is experiencing. Another one is Panning which is where the camera is mounted from left to right. Its used to the shot within from left to right. Last one is Whipped Pan which where its turned from one character to another. Its mostly used to simulate head movement.

What we did using this information

After getting all this information in class, we used our cameras on our phones and went to take pictures of the many shot types and angles. This was fun to me because we were actually moving around and using our own cameras (even if it was just our phones) to make these pictures and not just get them handed to use and be told which is which. I think its better when we are interacting and doing thins because we will remember it.But the project was fun and the pictures were embarrassing.

KWL

Before learning this I didn't really know anything about cinematography. After we learned and interacted I learned lots of new things about cinematography. Cinematography is about the camera movements, angles, and shots. It contributes a lot to the codes in a movie because the codes wouldn't make sense without the different movements, angles, and shots. Im not really curious about anything else in cinematography.

Top 3 favorite film opening scenes

In a class discussion we talked about our top 5 favorite films. I picked  Granddaddy day care, Scary movie, The trap, A haunted house 2, and Night school. All these movies are found on Netflix. So today I’ll talk about the opening scene on my top three favorite films.  Granddaddy day care Granddaddy day care is a comedy movie found on Netflix. It’s about a guy who wants to be a novelist but also has problems with money. His father in law needs a place to stay and him and his wife decide to let him stay as long as he needs. Needing to pay bills and find a quick way to make money he decides to start something like a day care for seniors at his house to make money off of that. Granddaddy day care opening scene showed the book that the man was thinking about and how he was having trouble trying to write it. This helped me see that him trying his best to make a perfect book meant that writing the book was important for his future and the movie will show later on why it was im...

Strip boarding

Today we are going to talk about strip boarding. Strip boarding is another important key to filming our opening scene. Lets just get right into it. What is strip boarding? Strip boarding is a chart containing color coded strips each strips containing information about a shot or scene in the films script. This is also somewhat of a calendar and can help you in creating your production calendar (there will be a blog for information on production calendar). This is a very important thing to do so you can be cognizant of what's going on in each scene. It can also help you film quicker. For example, in my groups strip board we have ours color coded by location. This is a very helpful technique because it helps you make filming everything a whole lot easier. It also helps you finish off shooting locations and ensures you that you don't have to go back and forth with locations. For our opening scene we have two locations. One which may consist of one our house or just use one of our ...

Production, Distribution, exhibition

Today in class we learned Production, Distribution, Exhibition. This should help us know what big production companies do to get their movies out there. Example of big movie companies: Walt Disney, Universal, and 20th century fox, etc.  Production    Production is how you make the film. You have to have an idea, have to write a script, control your budget. Most importantly you have to know your cast. Personally, I believe your cast has to match with each character. When the cast matches each character, they wouldn't have to think too much about acting. You also have to know your budget. The budget will show how much you can spend on everything in total that way you don't go overboard with money. With budgeting comes an investor. An investor is the person who is providing money for filming. You have to make sure that your film is fundable so that your not wasting money. You also need you producer. Your producer helps produce the film and pitches in ideas. You should ...
