Genre

 Introduction

In class we learned about genre. Genre is just a category of a film. Examples can be horror, comedy, action, romance, etc. Genre was probably the most easiest to learn because people talk about different genres everyday not only in film but also in books and other things. My personal favorite is horror comedy because while I am get scared and throwing things I also get some laughter out of it. Some types of genres can be mixed together and balanced out.

Examples

Horror comedy- Literary, television, and film genre that combines comedy and horror to form horror comedy

Horror comedy mixes horror with comedy to balance out the amount of laughter and the amount of thriller. Horror comedy has been around since 1920s. The first horror comedy was "One exiting night". it was directed by D. W. Griffith. Stereotypes in this genre is in the horror genre but put into a comedic way.

Sci-fi- a form of fiction that deals principally with the impact of actual or imagined science upon society or individuals

Sci-fi purpose is to bring up technology advancement in society. Sci-fi also are usually pure predictions for the future. They were used to speak about political issues. Sci- fi has been around since 1900. the earliest Sci-fi movie was A Trip to the Moon which is George Méliès.

Crime- investigation of a crime murder

Crime is people following clues or red herrings to lead to the villain. The hero must face some type of danger or conflict to get justice. Crime has been around since 1900. The earliest one is Sherlock Holmes Baffled. crime is supposed to be kind of mysterious and leave audience intrigued in what's happening.

Comedy- Created to be humorous and to give laughter

Comedy is meant to influence audience to laugh/ have a good time and meant to be humorous. Comedy has been around since 1895. The first comedy film is L'Arroseur Arrosé which is directed by Louis Lumière. It was less than 60 seconds and it started the genre of comedy.

Horror- suspenseful plot driven stories

Horror purpose is to give thriller and has things like a suspenseful soundtrack, clues left by villain, main character has to face to death. Horror can also be in black and white which creates a suspenseful mood for the audience. Horror should not consist of things that are comedic because it'll then be considered a horror comedy film. Usual stereotypes in this genre is either mad scientist, the cop, the killer, etc. These are important conventions because in every horror movie these characters are most important part of the story. For example, when the cops come to help they often die or are put into the trouble.

What we did using this information

Using all the information we learned about genre, Our class created a Film Genre Project. My group and I did the genre Horror Comedy. We all research different parts of the project. I researched the analysis of Horror Comedy. I found out that the film Scream started the trend of adding humor and horror together. Another film which was released 1998 that can represent horror comedy is The Bride Of Chucky. These movies are good representations because these movies give the whole meaning of what horror comedy should look like scary and funny.

KWL

Before we learned all of this, I already knew that genre was a category of film and that there were many of them. For example romantic comedy and Sci-Fi. Some things I learned was the meaning of genres and codes behind the many genres. These codes make the genre the way it is. Like in horror comedy a type of code is the unexpected situation. An unexpected situation is the where something you didn't expect to happen just happens out of no where which brings the source of the fear. The source of fear can be a modern villain or some type of mutation that attacks the main character(s). Things I would want to know is how many types of genres are there in film?

Opening scene

In class, we learned about different film openings. For example there is Flashbacks, Flash forward, Dreams, etc. The opening scene in a film is the most important part because it has to hook your audience to watch your film. The opening scene also gives some information about what the audience might see during the film. This keeps them curious and wanting to know more about the film.  What is an opening scene? An opening scene is how the movie basically gives information about what’s going to happen during the film. Sometimes the opening scene shows death, lovers coming together or lovers having relationship problems, potential marriage, etc. In opening scenes it also shows the character(s) you should be focusing on the most.  What is an opening scene? Cinematography

Cinematography  In class we learned about cinematography. From just looking at the word I thought it was going to be hard. It wasn't that hard to understand but it was kind of easy to understand. Cinematography is the art and technology of motion picture photography. So its mostly about the cameras movement, angles, and shots and what they are used for in general . Shots There are many type of camera shots but I won't talk about all I will just give a couple basic ones. First we got a Close up shot which is where the frame has just the head or face of the character in the screen. Its mostly used to show the emotion of the characters. Next we have a Long Shot which's shows the character form top to bottom without filling the screen. This shot is used to set the scene and the characters place in that scene. The last one I will give is Full Shot which is where the camera shows the character from top to bottom filling the frame. Its used to show more action rather than showing...
