What is an opening scene?

An opening scene is how the movie basically gives information about what’s going to happen during the film. Sometimes the opening scene shows death, lovers coming together or lovers having relationship problems, potential marriage, etc. In opening scenes it also shows the character(s) you should be focusing on the most giving little bits of information about the character. During the opening scene they may not talk but still find ways to give the audience little clues about the main character(s).

What are some examples of an Opening Scene?

Some examples of opening scenes are:

Flashback: This scene sets the audience in a time earlier than the main story. The flashback may have important information about changes in the main characters life leading up to what's currently happening to them. These are usually shown during romance movies to show how the couple was back then and what had lead up to their problem.

Flash forward: This scene shows events that happen later in time. The flash forward makes the audience curious of why it must have happened to the characters. Flash forward can be any type of emotion. Sometimes a flash forward may lead up to separation or getting together between two characters in a romance film. A flash forward can also lead up to the death of a hero in an action movie.

Dreams: This scene shows a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in characters mind. The dream is literally a characters actually waking up from a dream. Dreams are usually to show how the character wants there life to be. Usually with dreams it can show how character will end up in the future.

Metaphors: This scene expresses a variety of emotions, images, and expressions by combining two different situations. This scene is used mostly in comedy because it makes situations that can be seen as bad into something very funny by adding a whole different situation.

Why is the opening scene important?

The opening scene of a movie is important because it gives certain information and clues that the audience may need to know before the main story of the movie starts. It’s important that your opening scene has clear clues and information about your characters or the audience will stay confused. Some movies use a location they’ll use later on during the movie to give a better understanding of the location and to show that the location is very important to know about. Everything in the frame in your opening scene is there for a reason so it’s important that it gives clues to your audience and reflect of your genre.

Cinematography

Cinematography  In class we learned about cinematography. From just looking at the word I thought it was going to be hard. It wasn't that hard to understand but it was kind of easy to understand. Cinematography is the art and technology of motion picture photography. So its mostly about the cameras movement, angles, and shots and what they are used for in general . Shots There are many type of camera shots but I won't talk about all I will just give a couple basic ones. First we got a Close up shot which is where the frame has just the head or face of the character in the screen. Its mostly used to show the emotion of the characters. Next we have a Long Shot which's shows the character form top to bottom without filling the screen. This shot is used to set the scene and the characters place in that scene. The last one I will give is Full Shot which is where the camera shows the character from top to bottom filling the frame. Its used to show more action rather than showing...
